WE ARE WHO WE ARE is a 2020 coming-of-age drama television miniseries co-created and directed by Luca Guadagnino for HBO and Sky Atlantic. WE ARE WHO WE ARE consists of 8 episodes of 16 minutes.

STORY: We Are Who We Are focuses on two American teenagers who live on a fictional U.S. military base in Chioggia, Italy in 2016. The series explores friendship, first love and identity, and immerses the audience in all the messy exhilaration and anguish of being a teenager.  Fraser Wilson (Jack Dylan Grazer) is  a 14-year-old who moves from New York City to a military base in Chioggia, Italy with his mothers. Sarah Wilson (Chloë Sevigny) is a colonel in the United States Army and Fraser's mother. Maggie Teixeira (Alice Braga) is a major in the U.S. Army and Fraser's mother and Sarah's wife. Caitlin Poythress / Harper (Jordan Kristine Seamón) is a seemingly bold and confident 14-year-old who is struggling with her gender identity.

GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: When Fraser Wilson (Jack Dylan Grazer) first arrives on the military base in Season 1, Episode 1, he's viewed as an outcast by Caitlyn's friend group (Jordan Kristine Seamón), but it's clear that he feels drawn to Cait for some reason. It's more of a curiosity than a romantic attraction. Jonathan Kritchevsky (Tom Mercier) is  a major who works closely with Sarah. Fraser joins Jonathan and his girlfriend for a few minutes of shirtless dancing and kissing in a threeway, before wordlessly running away. There’s a sense he’s pushed his feelings as far as he can go; his crush on Jonathan — who is twice his age — perhaps exceeding his readiness to act on his feelings.

SPECIAL: This moment is the catalyst for Caitlyn/Harper's gender exploration arc that defines the first season. From here, Fraser and Caitlyn become close friends, sharing this secret that only they know. He is a huge support to Cait, introducing her to the term "transgender," showing her pictures and testimonials online of other trans men, gifting her with new "men's" clothes so she doesn't have to wear her dad's and helping her shave her face for the first time. All of these things lead up to possibly the biggest moment in Cait's journey thus far: in Episode 5, Fraser helps her cut off all of her hair. It's a beautiful and emotional scene, symbolizing the death of a former self and the emergence of a true identity. We Are Who We Are's Caitlyn Poythress is the transgender male representation that is so needed in the media.

AWARDS: 'WE ARE WHO WE ARE' 8 nominations.
