STORY: Vicious is set around the lives of elderly partners Freddie (Ian McKellen) and Stuart (Derek Jacobi), who have lived together in their flat in Covent Garden for 49 years. Freddie was a budding actor and Stuart was working in a bar when they first met. While Stuart is now retired and managing the household, Freddie still takes the occasional acting job and waits for his unlikely breakthrough. Their lives consist of entertaining their regulars, and throwing hostile comments at each other.
GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: Freddie Thornhill (Ian McKellen) has been Stuart Bixby's (Derek Jacobi) partner for 48 years at the time the first series begins and the couple have a love-hate relationship. Freddie is an actor on stage, on television and on the radio with few success. He briefly has a role in Downton Abbey as "Cook Staff #4" and is then offered a role in Call the Midwife. Stuart Bixby was a manager in a bar, but this he gave up.

SPECIAL: When Stuart reminisces about when he and Freddie first moved into their apartment, the reason behind their unique relationship is revealed, as Stuart apparently turns out to be a bad tea maker. They have their first fight, insult each other, then promise never to do so again, a promise that is soon broken. This episode stars Samuel Barnett as Young Stuart and Luke Treadaway as Young Freddie.
