VERBOTENE LIEBE (Int. Title: Forbidden Love) was a German television soap opera, created by Reg Watson for Das Erste. The show was mainly set in the German city of Düsseldorf, although at times the city of Cologne and the Spanish island of Mallorca featured prominently in the show's storylines. First broadcast on January 2, 1995, Verbotene Liebe originally aired five times a week in 24-minute episodes. It expanded to 45-minute episodes on June 21, 2011, and reduced to 40-minute episodes on January 23, 2012 to accommodate a modified timeslot. In 2006, the the pay-TV network Passion began broadcasting episodes of the show from scratch. VERBOTENE LIEBE consists of 4664 episodes of 24 to 45 minutes.

STORYLINE: Verbotene Liebe was initially based on original story and character outlines from the Australian soap opera Sons and Daughters. The show originally focused on two core families: the wealthy Anstetten family and the middle-class Brandner family.

GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: The relationship between Oliver (Jo Weil) and Christian (Thomas Schölermann) unfolds as a love story of two people who happen to be gay and who try not to play gay caricatures, as is often the case. The ups and downs of the couple's relationship play out over five years until the couple's engagement and wedding, and continue to this day.
