SMILEY is a Spanish romantic comedy television series based on the play of the same name by Guillem Clua which stars Carlos Cuevas and Miki Esparbé. It was released on Netflix on 7 December 2022. SMILEY consists of 8 episodes of 36 minutes.

STORY: Set in Barcelona, the plot revolves around the love story between two men, bartender Álex (Carlos Cuevas) and architect Bruno (Miki Esparbé), who meet because of a misdirected voicemail.

GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: There’s a Japanese legend that says a red thread unites people destined to one another since birth. Álex (Carlos Cuevas)  and Bruno (Miki Esparbé), couldn’t be more different. This strange couple only has in common they’re both men and they’re in love. Álex is suffering from a love disappointment; he’s put his hopes up with someone that just disappeared. Bruno is not looking for someone like Álex, but ends up meeting him. What starts like a coincidence will change their lives.

SPECIAL: The series is an adaptation of the theatrical play Smiley written by Guillem Clua, which was performed onstage by Albert Triola and Ramon Pujol. Production company Minoria Absoluta pleaded for the series to be fully shot in Catalan, but it was shot in Spanish with the subplot involving Eduardo Lloveras and Ruth Llopis using Catalan and the actors dubbing their own voices in the Catalan dub version. The episodes were directed by David Martín Porras and Marta Pahissa.
