The eldest son, 17-year-old Jimmy (Matt Shively), is a handsome wrestler, 14-year-old Shannon (Bebe Wood) is known for her charity work, and 16-year-old Kenny (Noah Galvin) is clearly Mom's favorite, even if he doesn't have the athleticism or selfless attitude. of his brother and sister. One day, father Pat confesses something: he and Eileen are secretly in therapy and considering divorce. Desperate, he suggests that everyone open up. Jimmy reluctantly admits that he suffers from anorexia, Shannon confesses that she steals money from collection boxes to buy a car and Kenny reveals that he is gay. These confessions shatter Eileen's myth of the perfect family. But instead of adapting, it's the beginning of a new family that stops pretending to be perfect and finally starts to really live.

GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: In the episode The Real Christmas, Eileen was looking for additional members for her Christmas choir. She found Brett (Sean Grandillo), whose voice was perfect for the job. SPECIAL: "The Real O'Neals' cancellation is poor timing in the real world, where a recent spike in abuse of LGBT young people might be eased by the continued airing of the pro-LGBT family comedy. In addition, the show's loss is a loss for visibility, as Galvin was one of the few out actors to play an LGBT role on network television" ADVOCATE May 12, 2017.
