OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH is an American period romantic comedy television series created by David Jenkins. Set in the early 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy. OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH consists of 18 episodes of 30 minutes.
STORY: Based on the true adventures of 18th-century would-be pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) also known as the "Gentleman Pirate". Set in 1717, the first season depicts the early days of Bonnet’s career as a pirate after abandoning his family and his comfortable life as a member of the landed gentry of Barbados. Bonnet is portrayed as having little or no aptitude for this role, with no experience beyond that of his privileged life.. After trading in the seemingly-charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede becomes captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede's fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard. Stede and crew attempt to get their ship together and survive life on the high seas.
GAY COUPLE STORY 1: Vico Ortiz as Jim Jimenez, a skilled fighter who has a bounty on their head for killing one of Spanish Jackie's husbands. With their friend and his lover Oluwande's (Samson Kayo) help, they join the crew of the Revenge in disguise while posing as a mute. At the end of the first season, they join Blackbeard's crew. Allyson Juliette portrays Jim as a child. Oluwande Boodhari, a level-headed crewmate on the Revenge who is sympathetic to Stede and tries to steer him away from danger.

SPECIAL 1: Ortiz is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns in English and elle/le/e in Spanish. In an episode of the podcast ‘Gender Reveal’, they identified as genderfluid as well as non-binary, comparing their gender to a waterbed, "constantly moving, but in a fun way". Ortiz performs as a drag king named "Vico Suave". Their character takes inspiration from both their Hispanic/Caribbean and American culture, as well as "men who are comfortable with their femininity".
GAY COUPLE STORY 2: The Revenge docked in Honduras where Stede Bonnet (Taika Waititi) met Edward Teach (Rhys Darby); better known as "Blackbeard," and the two began to sail together. At first, they sailed as two allied captains but one night, Blackbeard got Bonnet drunk and invited him aboard his own ship, Queen Anne's Revenge and their romance begun.

SPECIAL 2: Stede Bonnet was born in Barbados in 1688. The majority of his life was more or less what one would expect from a wealthy gentleman. Both his parents died when he was still quite young, and he inherited a large sugar plantation. He married in 1709 and had four children. He served in the British army as a Major, and in 1716 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace — but then his life took an unexpected turn. he bought a ship and hired a crew of 70 men and set sail, leaving his wife and children behind.
