SPECIAL: An analysis of primetime situational comedies featuring LGBTQ characters argues that heteronormative and homonormative constructs of sexuality, race, gender, and class are making many LGBTQ people invisible in the mainstream. Through discourse analysis, the study describes how these programs work to normalize gay and lesbian identities, which then resemble dominant heterosexuality, aiding the advancement of middle-class white gays, who embrace sexuality and dominant conventions of gender, race and privatize sexuality and class.
