STORY: The film drama tells three love stories from two generations of a family, in the 1940s and in 2017. Man in an Orange Shirt contains two separate but intertwined stories: Part 1 tells of the obstacles Western society throws up in the love relationship of the two veterans Michael and Thomas in the immediate post-war period. Part 2 describes the trials and tribulations of 21st century partnerships, using the example of Michael's grandson. The stories are connected by Flora, as Michael's grieving wife and Adam's grandmother, whose unrequited love for Michael and conservative upbringing results in a hateful reaction to Adam's coming out.
GAY COUPLE STORYLINE 1: Michael Berryman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), is a captain in the British Army, stationed in Italy. During a mission, Michael is reunited with an old classmate, Captain Thomas March (James McArdle), who was badly injured in the attack. Michael is close as Thomas recovers and before Thomas returns to England, the men share a kiss. Thomas makes Michael promise to visit him in London after the war. Immediately upon his return, Michael visits Thomas before even telling his girlfriend Flora (Joanna Vanderham) that he is back. Michael and Thomas spend a perfect weekend away from the world at the old mansion once owned by Michael's late parents. As their short time together comes to an end, Michael tells a very upset Thomas of his intention to marry Flora. Like Flora Berryman, Gale's mother had found a stack of love letters from a male friend in her husband's desk shortly after World War II ended. She also destroyed the letters, fearing he would be arrested, and out of disgust and ignorance, because she had learned homosexuality was linked to paedophilia.
