STORY: The series explores LGBTQ themes, featuring genderfluid and gay characters. The show's style has been described as absurdist and surreal. As Jude Dry of IndieWire describes, "Brian Jordan Alvarez uses the traditional sitcom as a foundation to imagine a world a few marbles short of reality." Steven Horowitz of Paper notes that while the series "may stretch beyond the limits of reality, it's actually deeply rooted in it."
GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: Caleb (Brian Jordan Alvarez) is the main character, and Karen (Stephanie Koenig) is his straight girl best friend. Out of the main cast of six characters, two, Caleb and Benicio (Antonio Marziale), are gay and a couple. One (Freckle - Jason Greene) is genderfluid, and one (Billy - Jon Ebeling), eventually comes out as bisexual. He is Caleb's crush. When Benicio and Billy kiss during the party at the end of episode 4, this is ackward for Caleb, because they are his boyfriend and his crush respectively.

SPECIAL: The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo includes many LGBTQ+ characters and topics, including non-cisgender characters. According to cast member Antonio Marziale, the show's representation is unique in that "[i]t doesn't have to be this big thing."
