DOWNTON ABBEY is an early 20th century British historical drama series created and co-written by Julian Fellowes. The series was first broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2010. DOWNTON ABBEY consists of 52 episodes of 1 hour.
STORY: The series is set on the fictional Downton Abbey estate in Yorkshire between 1912 and 1926. It depicts the life of the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic servants in the post-Edwardian era. Events from that time are covered in this series and include the news of the sinking of the Titanic; the outbreak of the First World War; the Spanish flu pandemic; the Irish War of Independence which led to the formation of the Irish Free State; the Teapot Dome scandal; the Beer Hall Putsch and the rise of the working class during the interwar period and alludes to the eventual demise of the British aristocracy.
GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: Philip Villiers, Duke of Crowborough (Charlie Cox), is a friend of the Crawley family. He is a self-proclaimed architecture student. He says he absolutely must marry an heiress, even if it means leaving for America. He spends a summer in London having an informal romantic and sexual relationship with footman Thomas (Rob James-Collier).
