THE BASTARD SON & THE DEVIL HIMSELF

FANTASY / ADVENTURE / DRAMA

UNITED KINGDOM

2022

THE BASTARD SON & THE DEVIL HIMSELF is a British fantasy drama television series created by Joe Barton, based on the novel Half Bad by Sally Green.. Netflix released the series October 28, 2022, but canceled future episodes despite positive reviews. THE BASTARD SON & THE DEVIL HIMSELF consists of 8 episodes of 1 hour.

STORY: The series tells the story of Nathan Byrne, a young man discovering his true identity as the illegitimate son of the dangerous witch Marcus Edge. Nathan Byrne has been quietly monitored by the Council of Fairborn Witches for the first 17 years of his life. The Council fears the illegitimate son of the "World's Most Dangerous Blood Witch" will turn out like his father. As the conflict between the Blood Witches and the Fairborn Witches escalates, Nathan finds himself the target of a modern-day witch hunt. He begins a life-or-death quest, building alliances with fellow witches Annalise and Gabriel, while learning about himself along the way.

GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: Nathan (Jay Lycurgo) is not gay but he is queer. In the first season of the show he kisses both Annalise (Nadia Parks) and Gabriel (Emilien Vekemans). At the end of the season he expresses his love to both characters. Going into season 2, it looks as though Nathan’s sexuality will be explored further.

SPECIAL: In The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, Nathan makes more references to Harry Potter. The series, which is based on the young-adult book series by Sally Green, is set in the present: so Potter is the reference for Nathan when he discovers that he has supernatural powers. Perhaps that is also easy for the viewer, who understands such a reference more easily than, for example, Linda Blair, in an average horror series that of course revolves around the age-old battle against evil.
