ANIMAL KINGDOM is an American drama series developed by Jonathan Lisco. It is based on the 2010 Australian film of the same name by David Michôd, also the executive producer of this series with Liz Watts who was also producing the film. Ellen Barkin played the lead role of Janine "Smurf" Cody in the first four seasons. Jacki Weaver played her in the 2010 film. ANIMAL KINGDOM consists of 75 episodes of 1 hour.

STORY: The series follows a 17-year-old boy, Joshua J. Cody (Finn Cole), going through life as J., who after the death of his mother moves in with his estranged relatives, the Codys, a criminal family clan ruled by matriarch, Janine 'Smurf' Cody (Ellen Barkin).

GAY COUPLE STORYLINE: Deran Cody (Jake Weary) is the youngest Cody son, is gay and a former competitive surfer who owns a bar and operates it as a legitimate sideshow. Deran has an on-again, off-again relationship with Adrian Dolan (Spencer Treat Clark) until their break-up for Adrian's safety. In the series, each of the sons has a close relationship with their mother (often verging on incestuous). With J. arriving, Deran immediately feels threatened, especially after J. finds Deran in a compromising position with Adrian

SPECIAL:. Weary's first time being associated with a gay TV role was in 2005 when he played Luke Snyder in As the World Turns, but he left the role just before the character was about to come out with his homosexuality. At the time, many in the press said Weary was homophobic for abandoning the character, but the actor now responds candidly: "It's embarrassing that someone really tried to create something out of nothing and make a big deal out of it".
